Let me introduce you to the art museum.

March 23, 2008
I volunteer at the Children's Art Museum. Kindergarten classes come to the museum as a field trip, so I work with new kids everyday. To me this is  disappointing because I was looking forward to creating bonds with the kids like I do with my campers at camp. Day after day of being with a kid allows you to learn what they are about and how they focus best. Additionally, the kids are more willing to open up to someone who is not a stranger. It is already hard enough for me to communicate with them because of the language barrier so only knowing them for two hours doesn't really help.

When the two kindergarten classes arrive, they sit down in the small but cute theater to watch a twenty minute play that gets the kids' imaginations flowing. My job is to tell the kids to sit down and be quiet. Then the kids split up into smaller groups and I pick a group to go with and help out. I pass out art materials, prepare art projects and sit quietly, setting a good example for the kids. There isn't a whole lot of work for me to do, so sometimes I get bored, but overall I like my job. The people I work with are amazing - the whole staff is great with kids, which doubles as just being really funny and animated. I hope that once I get to know the staff a little better they will trust me more and give me more work to do.
